The Cub Program

Postby MattCarter » Sun Sep 04, 2016 1:04 pm

Hello, and welcome to the 8th Orleans Cub Pack!

At the cub level, youth ages 8-10 learn about outdoor skills, respect for themselves and others, leadership and how to be the very best they can be. The Cub program gives the youth the opportunity to plan their own adventures and activities (With the support of their Scouters of course). From the planning of an activity, to the execution, to the review of what they learned, the Cubs will experience firsthand how they have to ability to create amazing experiences for themselves.
Below is a summary of activities that the Cub Pack has experienced in the past:

Fall Cycle (September-November)

The Scouting year begins the first Monday after Labour Day. With the arrival of new as well as returning Cubs, the beginning of each year is the perfect opportunity to refresh the Cubs’ memories on the foundations of the Cub Pack. The Promise, Law and Motto. The fall season brings unpredictable weather, sometimes high temperatures and sun, others hail and frost. We give the youth the opportunity to learn about how to prepare for fall camping and test their skills at our annual 8th Orleans Group Wide Camp, where all sections from Beavers to Rovers get together for a weekend of fun. In this cycle, we begin our popcorn selling campaign in an effort to raise funds for the Cub Pack as well as the 8th Orleans group as a whole. Our group sponsor, the Orleans United Church, holds a Remembrance Day service in which all sections of Scouting are invited to help with carrying flags and wreaths in order to show our respect. The cooler weather gives us the opportunity to teach the Cubs how to dress warmly in the outdoors to prepare them for winter.
There are no meetings on thanksgiving or Halloween night.

Winter Cycle (December-February)

In the winter we introduce the cold to the Cubs and show them how to thrive in it. We always make an effort to get the youth outdoors to show them how being prepared for the cold makes it a non-issue. It has become somewhat of a tradition that the pack goes on a Winter Camp each year where they can put their newfound skills to the test.
There are no meetings during Winter School Holidays.

Spring Cycle (March-May)

With the Spring comes sunshine and warmer weather, but for the Cubs it means more time outside and a whole new set of experiences. Spring camping is introduced to the youth and how to deal with wetter conditions. Typically, in the spring we participate in the area Kub Kar rally (small cars made and designed by the Cubs from a block of wood) where they get the opportunity to meet other Cubs from all over the Odawa Area and race their cars. In the spring time, we typically begin linking with other Scouting sections in 8th Orleans to show the youth what there is to look forward to further down the road. Third year Cubs have the opportunity to work closely with our Scout Troop where they will learn the basics of paddling, hiking and the Scout motto which is “Be prepared”. As our older Cubs get to experience the Scout Troop, we also give our Beaver Colonies the chance to learn about our Cub Pack and what we do. In May we celebrate our year and hold an advancement ceremony for all those moving up in sections.
There are no meetings over March Break

Summer Cycle (June-August)

The Summer cycle is the shortest of the four as our program ends in late June until September. We use this short time frame to go on year end trips where the Cubs have the chance to show what they have learned over the Scouting year. Third year Cubs have the option of continuing with regular Cub meetings or attending the Scout meetings during this month (they could also attend both if they wish). Typical year end trips include: Second/Third year Cub canoe trip, themed linking camp with the Beavers or a trip to Fort Henry in Kingston every three years (2017 is the next trip).

This is a basic outline for our Scouting year but anything can happen and plans can change. So come and join us for fun, adventure and an experience your child will never forget in the 8th Orleans Cub Pack.
