Third year scouts join the Venturers for the Opemikon Work Weekend. In this activity, they camp with Venturers and work to clean up our local camp.
Date: Opie work weekend is the weekend of April 29th to May 1st.
Travel: We will be leaving the Church at 6 pm sharp so please be there by at least 5:45. We expect to return to the Church on Sunday by about 4 pm, but will call when we are about ½ hour away.
Accomodations: Scouts & Venturers will be sleeping in the “Cabins” in the Scout field so we will not need tents. They have mattress with them so a sleeping pad is not required. All our of meals will be provided by the Opie Rover Crew so you will not need your ditty bags, but please do bring along at least 1 water bottle.
What to bring: You will require the regular camping stuff that you would bring to a camp in the spring, it might be cold, it might be wet, please prepare for this. If you aren’t sure what to bring, you can take a look in your Scout field book for a list of personal equipment.
Entertainment: As this is a Venturer camp, you are welcome to bring along a football or Frisbee or the likes as there will be free time to play. Friday and Saturday evenings will be dedicated to socializing with youth from our group and others, come ready to meet and have fun. On Sunday we will be doing the pre-training for the white water course and I would recommend that you bring your own PFD, and if you want you can bring your paddle too.
Service Project: Venturers will be repairing the trail to Paddlers Cove, we will need rakes (not the lawn type please) shovels (not snow type), if you have a pick axe it would be useful too, and work gloves if you have them. The trail may very well be quite muddy so good boots would be advised. The task will no doubt be a dirty one, so bring old clothes.
Other information: Although we will work hard on Saturday we will have fun, the weekend is “sold out” so obviously people enjoy the hard work and the camaraderie.
